Campbell's Awards Recess With the Trotters

(HOLLYWOOD, Fla., May 15, 2008) – Campbell’s Labels for Education program awarded students at Hollywood Hills Elementary School in Hollywood, Fla., an all-day recess with the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters on May 15, as well as one million Labels for Education (LFE) bonus points to redeem for the tools and resources the school needs most.

The all-day recess was won by a kindergartner’s family member as part of Campbell’s “Recess Rules!” sweepstakes, which Campbell’s created in response to a growing trend in schools across the country eliminating recess from their curriculum.

“Campbell Soup Company and the Harlem Globetrotters believe physical fitness is critical to children’s health and development, which is why the decreasing amount of physical activity in schools today is a major concern,” said Anne Pizarro, program director, Campbell’s Labels for Education. “We are committed to promoting childhood wellness and support increased opportunities for physical activity in schools.”

To get kids excited about physical activity, the Globetrotters showed the students a variety of healthy and fun recess-related activities.

“We are thrilled that our school received this great opportunity from Campbell’s Labels for Educationto have the Harlem Globetrotters visit and teach our students about the importance of physical activity,” said Hollywood Hills Elementary School Principal Vered Roberts. “We also are excited to redeem our Labels for Education bonus points, which we’re giving to each teacher to order the resources they need, which means every child in our school will benefit.”

Mayor Peter Bober was also on hand to congratulate Hollywood Hills Elementary School and recognize Campbell’s Labels for Educationfor its efforts related to physical activity.

For more than 35 years, Campbell’s Labels for Education program has given schools and communities the opportunity to collect proofs from eligible Campbell’s brands to earn points toward redeeming free merchandise such as physical fitness equipment, computers, library books, musical instruments and more. Since the program began, LFE has awarded more than $100 million in educational tools and resources to participating schools nationwide.

In April 2007, the Globetrotters’ official beverage, V8 Splash, awarded a Terre Haute, Ind., middle school with $50,000 to enhance its gymnasium and a special game with the Globetrotters.

Celebrating their 82nd consecutive season of touring the world, the Harlem Globetrotters have played in 118 countries on six continents, entertaining over 128 million fans and crossing barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life.  The Globetrotters are one of only six teams to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
